Loadouts

A loadout in Active Matter is a bet: which pockets you fill, which plates you risk, and which raid type is allowed to delete the kit. This page turns the weapon tier list into three price bands — budget, mid, and chad — then splits those bands across Isolated PvE, Open PvPvE, and Downtown. It also covers key farming, drones, rental gear, and the inventory rule that gets more operatives killed than bad aim: do not overfill pockets.

Patch 0.4.0.62 made pouches expand overall inventory and add per-category volume bonuses — medical pouches hold more medkits, mag carriers hold more ammo. Body Sleeve pockets are gone; each Body Sleeve still grants its own volume bonuses, with base carry cut by 100 and some suits offset +25 / +50. Quick-access slots now point at an inventory item instead of storing a clone. If you cram every bonus with extra guns, you will extract a museum and die because the mag you needed was under a crowbar. Leave unused volume on purpose. Live notes: Patch 0.4.0.62.

Safe containers still leave the raid with you when you die. That is the insurance slot, not a second backpack. Rental gear from the Agency is independent of the selected raid after 250 Shades of Liberty — you can take a scav-style kit into Downtown without pairing it to a specific queue. Rented items dump into a one-way post-raid stash that clears when you queue again, so sort them before the next deploy.

Budget kits (credits tight, Isolated first)

Goal: survive Isolated Dalniy long enough to fill a safe container with plates, keys, and a gun you will replicate.

  • Primary: MB590 or a scavenged AK-pattern rifle. SOK-94 Vepr is acceptable. Do not buy an M4A1 yet.
  • Sidearm: starter M9 or MP-443. Melee: crowbar or pry bar so you can crack crates without burning shells.
  • Armor: polyethylene or steel S/L plates. PASGT helmet. Skip titan.
  • Sleeve: starter Pulse, Liquidator, or Enforcer. Pulse’s +10% healing is a budget cheat code.
  • Pockets: two mag pockets, one med pocket, one grenade pocket left empty for a key. Medkits plus loose Medications to refill them.
  • Queue: Isolated only. Open will farm you.

Budget raids are key and plate raids. Headquarters southern gas station and signal post still drop ceramics. Park wants fire, not a chad suppressor. If Isolated access is gated by edition, spend the Standard 29.99 kit on Isolated tickets you no longer need — tickets converted to Crystallised Active Matter — and use solo matchmaking on Open maps as a poor substitute, not as a plan.

Mid kits (you can replace one death)

Goal: Isolated bosses, Open Shegolskoe / Factory / Cargo Port, and cautious Downtown Unstable Zone.

  • Primary: M4A1 or AEK-971 with EXPS3 or TA31. Patch 0.4.0.62 made red dots free ADS, so stop running irons to “stay fast.”
  • Secondary: PP-2000 or Scorpion EVO 3 if the map is interiors; SVDM if you are holding Dam catwalks.
  • Shotgun: Origin-12 once the recipe is live. Until then SPAS-12.
  • Armor: ceramic L on thorax, steel or ceramic on limbs if the sleeve allows L slots. A3 or EDH-Gen V helmet. Active Headset if the helmet includes one.
  • Sleeve: Beast at 9.5% bulletproof if you have it; otherwise Rebel after its plate-slot buff.
  • Utility: Harpy scout drone, one smoke, one incendiary for Park. Beacon you can pick back up.
  • Pockets: mag + mag + med + grenade + one universal empty for a Port Crane or Armory key.

Mid kits die when you treat them like chad kits. Do not hunt other operatives on Open Headquarters with ceramics and a Vepr. Do not bring the Origin-12 into a long-range Dam fight. Read how to extract and leave when the backpack has two keys and a stack of plates, not when you feel greedy.

Chad kits (you will be sad if you die)

Goal: Open PvPvE, Downtown Collapse, Nexus when you already understand Nexus Battles.

  • Primary: suppressed SCAR-L or M4A1, or SCAR-H if Harmonization paid out and you accepted no suppressor. AN-94 if you actually use hyper-burst.
  • Marksman: M110A1 or M39 EMR (Harmonization) with 1P69 or thermal S350F for Distortion / night aurora.
  • CQB: DP-12 (Harmonization) or Origin-12; Scorpion still wins stairwells.
  • Special: RPG-7 for vehicles, Gravity gun if you find it in raid (it will not come home), flamethrower only on Overgrowth / Park.
  • Armor: titan XL Assault on thorax, titan or ceramic L on limbs. TFMK-I helmet with Active Headset. Beast or a late Harmonization sleeve (Viper / Torque) if unlocked.
  • Utility: thermal drone or kamikaze drone (Harmonization), Harpy as the cheap scout, Robot Dog sent to extract without you, tactical beacon as the revive plan.
  • Pockets: disciplined. Mags for the gun you are holding, not four receivers. Medications, Burst Injector if you have it, one slot for a military crate key.

Chad is a tax. If you cannot replace the kit from stash plus replicator, you are in a mid kit with extra attachments. Run Isolated once to warm up, then Open. Downtown Collapse is not a first chad outing.

Isolated PvE versus Open PvPvE versus Downtown

Isolated is PvE with edition-gated access. Pack volume, fire for Park, and cheap plates. Other operatives are not in the raid. You still die to Distorted, Flowermen, Invisibles, and the shrinking zone. Bring a flamethrower or incendiaries when the modifier is Overgrowth. See how to beat anomalies.

Open is the real extraction game: squads of up to three, suppressors, headsets, and a plan for being third-partied on Factory hangars. Ammo economy matters because you will fight PvE and a squad. A MAC-11 dump that clears a nest leaves you empty for the players who heard it.

Downtown is North American CQB with police and SWAT still running distorted protocols. Avenues, ruined skyscrapers, school buses, and taxis are cover. Unstable Zone plays like a shrinking battle-royale exit. Collapse / overtime is the high-chaos version of the old America: Collapse raid. Pack SMGs, an AR, and medicine that you can proc in one use after the medkit rework. American vehicles are loot and weapons, not sightseeing.

Gigastructure is its own kit: compact guns, Gravity gun if the drop lands, no LMG. Airport Africa is hangars plus a plane in a gravity anomaly — treat it like a vertical Factory. Nexus Vanilla Mall is PvP with respawn rules, not an extraction backpack puzzle.

Key farming without turning into a loot goblin

Keys are crafted in the refiner from fuses and Black Mill cassettes once the recipe is unlocked at the Monolith. You also find live keys in raid. High-value names:

  • Port Crane — Cargo Port gravity puzzle at the floating barges. End of the portal chain, blue crane, barge of military medical crates, swim to extract.
  • Armory 1 / 2 — Military Base, barracks 1 and 2. Guns, often AK-pattern piles.
  • Hangar keys — Factory east hangars (17/18 and neighbors). High PvP, campers, still worth a mid kit.
  • Military crate keys — portable value; swim or rotate from Port if you already have the crane key.

Craft keys in the Shelter, bring one, leave a pocket empty for the second you find. A kit with four keys and no mag is how Open Factory deletes you. Color-coded rare loot icons on the raid select screen tell you which Dalniy instance is worth a key run this queue.

Drones: Harpy, kamikaze, thermal

Harpy is the scout recipe on Advanced and Premium editions and a replicator staple. Use it to peek hangars, floating Shegolskoe houses, and Downtown stairwells without committing a titan plate. Drones can carry more than grenades now — ammo, meds, a key — which makes the Harpy a pocket you fly.

Kamikaze (Harmonization) is a room-clear tax. Send it into a SWAT stack or a camping hangar instead of swinging a chad AR around the door.

Thermal (Harmonization) is the Distortion / night / Invisible answer. Pair it with S350F glass only if you already have the headset discipline not to tunnel-vision.

Do not bring three drones on a budget kit. One Harpy plus empty pockets beats a drone museum.

Rental gear and pocket discipline

Agency rental is the no-risk queue. It is random: sometimes an M4, sometimes a double-barrel. Because rental is raid-independent, you can learn Downtown without staking a replicator M4A1. Tactical beacons revive a downed operative with random rental, which is a mid-kit insurance policy on Open.

Pocket rules that keep kits alive:

  1. Body Sleeve sets capacity and volume bonuses. Pouches add category volume, not a second grid.
  2. Typed pockets beat universal pockets. Magazines go in mag pockets.
  3. Leave one pocket empty for a key, a gravity-gun find, or a titan plate you did not pack.
  4. Safe container is for the item you cannot replace: the Armory key, the Harmonization gun, the TFMK-I.
  5. If the raid debrief shows you died with four receivers and zero mags, the loadout failed, not the weapon tier list.

New players should still run the beginner guide and bind controls before copying a chad table. Map choice lives on the maps hub. Patch notes that change pouches, drones, or rental sit on the updates hub.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What is a good first Isolated loadout?

Pump shotgun or scavenged rifle, PASGT, steel or polyethylene plates, Pulse sleeve if you have the healing bonus, and two empty pockets for keys. Stay Isolated until you can replace a mid kit.

Do pouches increase backpack size?

After 0.4.0.62, yes — pouches expand overall inventory and add per-category volume. Body Sleeve pockets are gone. Overfilling that bonus volume is how full kits still run dry. See Patch 0.4.0.62.

Should I take rental gear into Downtown?

Yes if you cannot replace a mid kit. Rental is independent of the selected raid, so you can learn SWAT patrols without staking a replicated M4A1.

Which keys are worth crafting?

Port Crane, Armory, Hangar, and military crate keys. Craft them in the refiner from fuses and Black Mill cassettes, and always leave a pocket free for a live key you find in raid.

When do I bring a flamethrower instead of an S-tier AR?

Park, Overgrowth, and any raid where Flowermen and Dendroids are the main timer. An M4A1 does not replace fire. See how to beat anomalies.
